What is Hypoallergenic Bedding?

The word hypoallergenic is an adjective, and means ‘relatively unlikely to cause an allergic reaction’.  It was first used when referring to makeup or skin care products, but its now used for a wider variety of products, including hypoallergenic bedding.

Soothe sensitive skin with hypoallergenic bamboo bed sheets from BedVoyage! In this blog, discover what hypoallergenic bed sheets are, learn what qualities make the best hypoallergenic sheets, and start your journey to sleeping comfortably at night with our OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified sheets.

What Makes Bed Sheets Hypoallergenic?

Some criteria you could look for when determining if the sheets are hypoallergenic is if the bedding is made from natural fibers such as bamboo, organic cotton or linen. These fabrics will be less irritating to skin as they are are grown with none or very limited use of pesticides, which can cause skin irritation.

Hypoallergenic Sheets are Good For People that:

  • Suffer from allergies, asthma, eczema or psoriasis
  • Have aging or sensitive skin
  • Have peripheral artery disease or nerve damage
  • Recovering from surgery

Finding the Best Hypoallergenic Bed Sheets

Choose Hypoallergenic Materials:

As noted above, your first step is to look for fabrics that are not synthetic, especially fabrics such as microfibers. Synthetic fabrics generally do not feel anything like natural fabrics, they can tug at your skin (think the feel of a microfiber dust rag on your skin, ick!) and they can even cause you to perspire more. You'll appreciate the gentle and comforting feel of natural fibers against your body, the fabric will breath, absorb moisture and help you stay a bit cooler.  Bamboo is naturally resistant to bacteria, so your linens will stay fresh longer.

Oeko-Tex certified fabrics mean they have been tested to even be safe for babies. Look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification, which confirms the fabric is free from harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde and flame retardant as those can cause allergic reactions.

Look For Breathability Properties:

Thread counts between 300-500 are a good indicator of softness and breathability. If a fabric is breathable, then you'll likely perspire less which reduces irritation from moisture and bacteria. Very high thread counts of 800-1000 means that the threads are woven very tightly and will generally not be breathable, which can cause you to overheat.

Opt For Softness:

If you were to look at the bamboo thread and a cotton thread under a microscope, you’d see that the cotton has more loose frays, while the bamboo fiber will appear smooth and tubular. Those frays are what can cause sheets to be scratchy and uncomfortable, and also create pilling. Low-cost or low-quality sheets can easily cause irritations for people that suffer from skin sensitivities or simply don't like the feel of scratchy sheets. Soft quality sheets are soothing and comforting, your bedding is an important aspect of how well you sleep at night. Don't scrimp on your bedding, buy quality bamboo sheets and you'll get to enjoy them for many years to come!

Hypoallergenic bedding is often recommended by doctors to help alleviate symptoms of asthma or allergies for their patients.  We don’t coat our linens with formaldehyde. This is what the cotton industry does to make wrinkle-resistant linens. We also don’t use flame retardant chemicals, as those have been proven to increase allergic reactions and chemical sensitivities.

BedVoyage Bamboo Sheets are very hypoallergenic, as they're extremely gentle and soothing to skin.  Bamboo fibers are so silky-soft and gentle to the touch, your arms and legs will glide effortlessly as you move during sleep. Some of our customers have said ‘it’s like slipping into butter!’

Avoid Bedding with Dangerous Dyes:

Color poisoning is a nuanced subject. Some dyes just impact people with sensitive-skin, they may get a rash, or have breathing disorders from the off-gassing of the textiles. While others may get cancer or autoimmune disorders. We aim to educate you on the basic types of dyes and the side effects from them. One main issue is that most fabrics will not disclose the type of dyes they use. You may have to hunt deeply on a brand’s website to determine how they color their textiles. BedVoyage uses Reactive Dyes for all of our products.

Bamboo Sheets Are Moisture-Wicking:

An added bonus of sleeping on bamboo linens is they're moisture-wicking abilities, if you have skin issues, you certainly don't need sweat added to your issues. Because bamboo is a fabric that breathes more so than cotton, you sleep cooler than with most other fabrics. An added bonus is that bamboo fibers draw moisture away and evaporate it faster than cotton fibers. This is due to the micro-gaps and holes in the bamboo fibers that draw the moisture.

Testimonials:

Hands down my favorite sheets- they are everything they claim to be.  Carrie F.

FAQ:

Do hypoallergenic sheets prevent dust mites?   Although we cannot guarantee that they will prevent dust mites, bamboo sheets can help reduce the allergic reactions that come from dust mite droppings, due to their anti-bacterial properties.

What pillowcases are best for sensitive skin? A pillowcase that has a silky feel to it will help reduce the friction that can irritate sensitive skin. So opt for smooth fabrics, natural fibers, and ones that are not treated with chemicals that can further irritate your already suffering skin.

What are some other things I can do to minimize allergens in my bedroom?  If you have carpet or rugs, vacuum frequently as this can reduce allergens from building up. You can also dust dressers, nightstands and windowsills frequently. All you need is a lightly dampened cloth (nothing else needed!) and one dry cloth. Wipe with the damp cloth, then the dry cloth.

Are cotton sheets hypoallergenic?  They can be if they are made from organic cotton, which does not use pesticides while growing or harvesting. So read the label!

For all of these reason: bamboo bedding is a great hypoallergenic option for everyone in the family!  Visit our site at www.bedvoyage.com to find a Sheet Set, Duvet, or Coverlet that is luxuriously soft against your skin!
