What is Menopause?

It happens to every woman, and although its virtually unstoppable, there are things you can do to lessen the symptoms. Menopause is your body’s natural way of slowing down the process of having periods and releasing eggs, until the point that both of those stop altogether. Some women look at this as a melancholy time in which your body is telling you its no longer viable to get pregnant. Others look at this as the next stage in their life, in which they no longer must deal with the hassle and pain of periods, PMS, mood swings and scheduling vacations around your period!

Menopause can occur between the ages of 38-55 with the average age in the US being 51 years old. It can last for 2 to 8 years, with some women experiencing it well past 10 years.

With menopause come a myriad of symptoms from hot flashes, sleep disorders, mood changes and even brain fog. There are many natural remedies, as well as hormone replacement therapies that can help to alleviate the most troublesome symptoms. One thing you can do to sleep better with the best bed sheets for menopause, purchase a silky set of BedVoyage Bamboo Sheets, they go a long way to help you mitigate those hot flashes!

Why Menopause Causes Hot Flashes at Night

Hot flashes can occur at any time during the day or night but do feel more disruptive at night because the intense flush of heat will often wake you. If this happens multiple times during the night, you’re likely not going to get a good night’s sleep and may feel exhausted the next day. It’s normal for your body temperature to drop during sleep, so when a sudden hot flash comes on, it becomes much more noticeable, which makes it seem worse at night.

What’s Wrong with Regular Sheets?
If the sheets you’re used to sleeping on don’t have moisture-wicking properties, chances are you’re not going to sleep more cool or dry during hot flashes or night sweats. It’s important to shop for sheets that say they’re thermal-regulating, temperature-regulating, cooling, or moisture wicking. If you have some favorite sheets that have stood the test of time, you may just need to put them away until you’ve passed through the hot flash phase. Check out our luxury bamboo bed sheet set

What to Look For when Picking Bed Sheets for Menopause

A fabric that naturally wicks moisture away from your skin, and even better; evaporates it quickly too, can help you sleep drier. Many women have resorted to putting a Bath Sheet under their body in order to absorb the perspiration. This way they can just launder the bath sheet vs the entire set of bedding.

A simpler choice to help you sleep more cool and dry is to invest in a quality set of Bamboo Sheets. BedVoyage offers all sizes and multiple colors in moisture-wicking, quick evaporating, cooling to the touch, and incredibly silky smooth against your body sheets, duvets and coverlets. When you sleep on sheets that have a cooling effect, you simply need to glide a leg or arm across the sheets when you get hot, and that cool spot will help to reduce your heat.

Breathability

Many people don’t realize that thread count plays a major role in how cooling, or how hot, your sheets will be. Thread count is determined by how many threads are woven into 1 square inch. The two directions of the threads, called warp and weft, are added together to determine the thread count. Therefore, a 1000 thread count sheet is going to be much hotter than a 300 thread count sheet. When you think about how tight a weave has to be in order to get 1,000 threads into 1 inch; this fabric cannot breathe. It’s like the difference between trying to breath through a denim fabric or a muslin fabric. There’s virtually no comparison, as the denim is so dense you won’t get a good breath.

BedVoyage sheets are woven at the sweet spot of 300 thread count, this is the magic place where breathability and smoothness blend together. The feel of 300 thread count bamboo sheets has an incredible drape and hand-feel, where the fabric simply glides over your body. It’s a similar feel to very high thread count sheets, but without the hotness. Bamboo fibers also have micro-gaps and holes in them, naturally. This allows heat to pass through as if the fabric had its own air conditioning!

Naturally Cooling and Moisture-Wicking

Those micro-gaps and holes we mentioned in bamboo fibers also help to absorb moisture, then quickly evaporate it so that you sleep drier. Hot flashes can leave some women drenched in sweat, and then the sweat cools and you get the chills. This is probably one of the most uncomfortable situations when sleeping, making you want to get up in the middle of the night and change your bed. Sleeping on the best bed sheets for menopause; bamboo sheets, can seriously help reduce the need to change your bed. Also, bamboo is naturally resistant to bacteria, so even if you do perspire, bacteria will not multiply on your sheets causing them to smell. So not only do you get to sleep drier, but your sheets will remain fresh longer!

Thermal Regulation

A sheet fabric that can sense when you’re hot and releases that heat is called thermal-regulating sheets. We like to call our bamboo sheets a Smart Fabric, as they can sense if you are hot or cold, and help to regulate your temperature. Some people may think bamboo sheets are only good if you’re a hot-sleeper, but cold sleepers can benefit from bamboo sheet sets too, because when the fibers sense you are cold, they keep your warmth in around you vs releasing it. See, it’s a magical fabric that senses your needs and adjusts to them!

Hypoallergenic Properties

If you were to look at a bamboo fiber under a microscope, it would look smooth and round, like a hair on your head. If you looked at a cotton thread under a microscope it would look like a hemp rope, all frayed and scratchy. This tubular structure of bamboo fibers is what makes them hypoallergenic, which means a ‘non-irritant to skin’. This is why the fabric just glides and drapes beautifully across your body, it does not create the friction that scratchy threads create.

People who suffer from skin sensitivities like acne, eczema, psoriasis or foot neuropathy from diabetes will be incredibly comforted by bamboo fabrics. Likewise, if you have hair loss or don’t want deep creases on your face from scratchy cottons, bamboo is a fantastic fabric as it will not aggravate those conditions nor exacerbate wrinkles in your shin.

Comfort and Softness

Bamboo simply offers unparalleled comfort and softness. There just aren’t any other sheets on the market that have this very unique feel. When you turn your head on the pillow, it feels comforting to your face. When you roll over or move a leg or arm, it just feels effortless. The silky smooth fabric will make you let out a sigh when you first get into bed. You will smile as you move your body against the fabric. Some people have said ‘its like you want to make snow angels in bed’ because the sense and feel of the bamboo sheets give such joy.

Best Sheets for Aging Skin

As we age, our skin becomes thin and more delicate. You might cringe a little when you see your skin looking crepey or notice a bruise that seems to come out of nowhere. Accidentally knocking your arm hard against something can even cause bleeding and then a scab is created.  It’s all a normal and natural part of aging. We can do our best to embrace age with grace and some self-love for all the lessons, hard knocks and joys that have come our way! If you’re looking for the best sheets for aging skin, again it is bamboo. There are no scratchy fibers that grab your skin, or tug on any sores, or aggravate skin sensitivities. The bamboo sheets will give you comfort, and when you don’t have sheets that don’t exacerbate your skin issues; you can heal faster.

For all the reasons we noted above, you cannot go wrong with sleeping on bamboo sheets for those 7-9 hours per night that you are snuggled into bed! You can sleep cooler, drier, and in fresher sheets as bamboo is naturally resistant to bacteria. Sheets that wick away moisture then evaporate it is a big help if you’re having hot flashes and just don’t have time to change your bed multiple times per week. Bamboo sheets can be the best sheets for menopause, so do yourself a favor and buy yourself some luxury cooling sheets that I promise you’ll see they’re worth every penny. FAQ

How long do BedVoyage bamboo sheets last with regular use?

You can expect to get 5-8 years of joy out of your BedVoyage bamboo sheets, depending on how often you wash them and if you have a 2nd set that you rotate with. We have had customers tell us they bought their sheets from us at Costco in 2015 and are STILL sleeping on them.

Will bamboo sheets keep me warm in colder months too?

Although we call them cooling sheets, one of the unique qualities of bamboo sheets is that they can sense if you’re body temperature is cold and keep your warmth around you, just like they can sense you’re overheating and release the heat. One nice thing about bamboo bedding is that it remains room temperature, so you won’t experience that chill that you get when you climb into cotton linen. You might have a few seconds of needing to warm up, and then they are matching your body temperature.

What pillowcases pair best with BedVoyage sheets for cooling?

Your sheet set comes with a matching set of pillowcases, but if you want to add more because you have multiple pillows on the bed; you can simply purchase another set or two. The smooth fabric and the cooling abilities of bamboo will keep your hair smoother and your face softer.

How do BedVoyage bamboo sheets compare to silk for cooling?

Although silk sheets can be cooling as well and have some of the same benefits of bamboo, BedVoyage bamboo sheets are vegan and cruelty-free, unlike silk which needs to kill the silk moth larva to extract the silk from its cocoon. BedVoyage uses the Moso species of bamboo in the production of our bamboo textiles. The bamboo is farm-raised, which means no natural bamboo forests are harvested in the production of our fabrics, and it’s not the favorite bamboo for pandas to eat! Moso bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants (it’s actually classified as a grass) on the planet. You can actually watch it grow up to 3’ per day!

Do I need a special detergent to wash bamboo sheets?

We do recommend a gentle liquid detergent as any detergent that says ‘gets grass stains out of your jeans’ is going to be much too harsh for bamboo. If you want them to remain soft and smooth so they last longer; use a gentle liquid detergent.

For all of these reasons, choosing to purchase quality bamboo sheets from BedVoyage will get you the best bed sheets for menopause!
