Are Bamboo Sheets Any Good? Pros and Cons

Learn about how bamboo sheets are made, their benefits, and why they might be the perfect addition to your bedroom. Learn about a few cons, with helpful tips to ensure you're still making a smart, eco-friendly choice for better sleep with BedVoyage bamboo sheets.

What are Bamboo Sheets?

Bamboo stalk in BedVoyage bamboo sheets

Bamboo Sheets are constructed like other sheets, such as cotton, but they’re made from the bamboo plant, which is actually designated as a tree. Bamboo is grown without the need for pesticides or fertilizer, so it’s a very sustainable and eco-friendly resource.  There’s no difference in the design, meaning the Sheet Set has 1 deep-pocket Fitted Sheet, 1 Flat Sheet and 2 Pillowcases. But the FEEL is 100% different than any other sheets on the market, you simply must try them to understand!

How Bamboo Sheets are Made:

Factory making bamboo fabric

Bamboo fibers are made from the stalk of the Moso bamboo plant, which is pulverized and then the pulp is spun through a Spinneret. This spins out super fine, round and smooth fibers, similar to a hair on your head. Looking at a bamboo fiber and a cotton fiber under a microscope will show you a huge difference. The bamboo fibers look like a smooth tubular thread, yet the cotton fiber looks like a rough hemp rope. This is why the hand-feel of bamboo sheets is simply indescribable. People are literally shocked when they feel the difference between a bamboo sheet and a cotton sheet. We spent 10 years selling our linens inside Costco so that we could educate consumers on the benefits of bamboo bed sheets and bamboo towels. You’ll be forever converted to bamboo, and never want to sleep on cotton again!

Pros of Bamboo Bedding:

There are so many positive reasons to make the switch from cotton to bamboo bedding! To name a few; bamboo bedding is naturally hypoallergenic, which means ‘non-irritant to skin’, its odor and bacteria-resistant so your linens stay fresh longer, and it’s a cooling fabric, like having your own little air-conditioner in your bed!  Let’s explore some additional pros of bamboo sheets.

Sleep Comfortably with Bamboo Bedding:

Sleep is one of the most important and healing things we do each night. GOOD sleep is a critical component in experiencing the difference between a good day and a bad day. Bad sleep causes you to tiredly drag yourself through the day, with limited focus and energy. Good sleep means you’ll wake refreshed and ready to take on the day with a great attitude. Many sleep studies have documented that getting poor sleep leads to many health issues.  Tossing and turning at night on bad sheets can lead to more serious issues than simply being tired.

Another natural attribute of bamboo fibers is the micro-gaps and holes in the fibers that allow heat to escape, which makes them a naturally cooling fiber. When woven together into a fabric, they create the perfect textile for bedding because they’re super comforting and soft. If you sleep hot; they allow heat to escape to keep you cooler while sleeping, and they’re hypoallergenic due to the non-abrasive structure of the fibers.

Bamboo Has Amazing Durability:

The long fibers and tight twill weave used in the making of all BedVoyage bedding is what makes it last so long. Twill is a diagonal weave that locks in the fibers and greatly limits the possibility of pilling. You can barely see it in the BedVoyage set of sheets, but you can clearly see it on a pair of blue jeans that have that wide diagonal weave that makes the fabric last for years. Pilling is what happens when the fibers have loosened and knotted together. It creates little balls on the surface of the fabric, which is unsightly and scratchy to the skin, and nobody wants that in their bedding!  For long term results of smooth bedding, do follow our care instructions.

We Sustainably Source Our Materials:

We go the extra mile to source our materials responsibly, opting for super soft and eco-friendly bamboo fabric that's a win-win for comfort and the environment. The bamboo yarns used in the making of all our products is also sourced in India, and our linens are ethically made there. Our factories annually pass a stringent audit by SMETA, to ensure fair wages and safe working conditions for everyone involved.

We Work Directly with Our Manufacturer

Our CEO, Sharon Stuart, communicates daily with our 2 factories in India. One factory makes our Towel and Robes, and the other makes our bedding. They both carry all the highest certifications such as Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and Made in Green. A Quality Control person familiar with our products inspects every shipment before it is accepted and allowed to ship to BedVoyage’s warehouse in Illinois. All orders are shipped from our warehouse, using minimal packaging to reduce waste.

Skin Sensitivities and Allergies

Due to the silky smoothness of the fibers, they greatly reduce any skin irritations. People who suffer from eczema often purchase our bamboo sheets and tell us that they truly alleviate the itching and scratching. Bamboo simply soothes the skin, unlike cheap or pilling cottons that can aggravate skin.

Allergy Buyers Club is a website that carries our bamboo bedding because allergy doctors often prescribe bamboo sheets to their patients. That same Bamboo Kun mentioned before means pests don’t really like bamboo, and dust mites are often what kicks up allergies for people. So sleep less stuffed up and sneezy on bamboo sheets!

In 2011, the National Toxicology Program, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, classified formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen. BedVoyage bedding is not coated with formaldehyde, nor flame-retardant chemicals. We want your sleep to be safe and healthy, so we have chosen to not use those toxic chemicals. A little wrinkle never hurt anyone, but toxins do!

Bamboo Sheets are Perfect for Your Furry Friends

As Bamboo is naturally resistant to odors and bacterial; it’s a good choice for pet owners. Pets seem to love the feeling of ultra soft bamboo linens. Because of the tight weave, pet claws don’t seem to snag the fabric as easily either. If your pets sleep with you; BedVoyage bamboo bed sheets can fit the bill nicely for you and your pets.

Pet hair should come off when you wash bamboo linens, and some people like to give them a hard shake (outdoors if possible) to shake off any hairs before laundering. But you can also use a lint roller between laundry days, or just before washing. Bamboo is anti-static so pet fur won’t cling as well as on other fabrics. Our durable tight twill weave helps prevent snagging of pets claws better than normal satin weave sheets, or knitted flannels.

Experience Ultimate Comfort with Thermal Regulating Smart Fabric

A ‘Smart Fabric’ is the term we’ve coined for bamboo bedding. The fibers have temperature-adjusting properties and can sense when you’re overheating. The heat is then released through those micro-gaps and holes, keeping you cooler. Similarly, it senses when you’re cold and will keep your heat in, so you stay warmer. For this reason, a couple that sleeps very differently with one being cold and the other being hot; can finally be comforted by the same sheets. Cold sleepers want jersey knits and flannels, and hot sleepers want cooling sheets. But they both struggle, as one may want the fan on or window open, and the other wants the heat on. With bamboo sheets, both people can sleep comfortably throughout the night, possibly for the first time. There’s no longer a struggle with compromises, both can finally feel a win-win in the right sheets.

What Thread Count are BedVoyage Bamboo Sheets?

Hands in BedVoyage Bamboo Sheets

Thread count is something that many sheet-shoppers look for, usually opting for higher counts, expecting more softness. But thread count is not the most important factor in how soft a sheet is. The material of the threads from which it’s made is the most important factor. This means that our 300 thread count sheets are softer and cost less than many sheets with a much higher thread count. Additionally a thread count of 300 for bamboo is very high. We’ve opted for the ‘sweet spot’ of 300 thread count as this will have incredible softness AND keep the breathability of the linens, although they’ll feel like 1,000 thread count Pima cotton.

Cons of Bamboo Bedding

The pros outweigh the cons, but let’s discuss the pros and cons that can help you make your best buying decision.

Initial Cost: Invest in Something That Lasts Forever

Bamboo Sheets do cost more than standard cotton or microfiber sheets. Those sheets can range from $29-$150 depending on where you shop. But the saying ‘you get what you pay for’ is so true in the case of bedding. Quality bed sheets help you sleep better, wake more refreshed, and ready to hit the day! Some high-end Italian cotton sheets can go as high as $2,500, but there’s no need to spend that kind of money on sheets, when you can get a high-quality luxury set of King Bamboo Bed Sheets from BedVoyage for just $239.00!

When cared for properly, you can expect to get 6-8 years out of a set of BedVoyage sheets, making your investment just pennies per day. Is your sleep worth it? I would think most people would say a resounding YES!

Care Requirements: Simple Steps for Freshness and Durability

We do recommend laundering in warm temperatures, with an eco-friendly liquid detergent, and drying on medium. This is how you will get longevity out of your linens, as well as keeping them in their best condition; smooth, fresh, and comforting. If this is too much work for you, you won’t harm bamboo bedding by laundering it your way (Tide, hot water, high heat??) but they likely won’t last as long. So, protect your investment and take the extra moment to keep your bamboo sheets lasting beautifully for years!

Wrinkling: Embrace Natural, Toxin-Free Texture

Formaldehyde is what the cotton industry uses to make cottons wrinkle-resistant. Formaldehyde is a ‘stiffener’ which you might recall from high school chemistry class. Unfortunately, the use of formaldehyde and other chemicals doesn’t have to be disclosed anywhere on the product label. The scary truth is that the government doesn’t regulate formaldehyde levels in bedding. There’s no requirement to disclose to the consumer when formaldehyde is used. The use of, and exposure to, formaldehyde produces a laundry list of possible health hazards. These include watery eyes, a burning sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat, coughing, wheezing, nausea, and skin irritation. We would never expose our customers to that, so you get a little wrinkle instead!

We describe our 100% Bamboo Sheets are our Luxe Line because this is the crème de la creme of bamboo bedding. The fibers are not blended with anything but pure bamboo fibers, they are silky-smooth to the touch, extra cooling, and feel fantastic against the skin, especially if you suffer from any skin sensitivities. We use this same fabric in the construction of our Duvet Covers, extra Pillowcase Sets, Coverlets and Euro Shams.

Melange Bamboo Sheets:

BedVoyage Melange Bamboo Bedding on Bed

Melange Bamboo is an innovative blend of 50% bamboo and 50% long-staple cotton yarns, offering the best of both worlds. It‘s cozy, comforting, a little warmer than 100% bamboo sheets, and a nice way to experience bamboo but at a lower price.  The mélange bamboo and cotton sheets have a unique textured appearance. Unlike traditional coloring methods, our waterless technique is 100% bleach-safe, allowing you to maintain the vibrant colors even if you prefer bleaching your linens. Additionally, it is BPO/Retinol safe, ensuring that lotions won't stain your sheets.

FAQ

What’s the difference between mélange and 100% bamboo sheets?

The difference is in the fabric. In our Luxe line of 100% Bamboo we use solely bamboo fibers in the making of our linens, it’s smoother, more luxurious and cooling. Our Melange Bamboo line is a blend of 50% Bamboo and 50% Cotton, as noted above. This line is more affordable for some, a bit more casual and cozy, but still retains some of those natural benefits of 100% bamboo sheets.

How should I wash my bamboo sheets?

Bamboo Bed Sheets are best cared for by washing in warm water with a liquid eco-friendly detergent and drying on medium heat. Proper washing will extend their life; and using hot water and high heat can cause any linens to pill, which are the uncomfortable bumps you’ll see on some sweaters or low-quality sheets. Also, bamboo is resistant to bacteria, so if you're used to using bleach to kill bacteria, there's no need to do so with bamboo. A quick tip list is below.

BAMBOO SHEETS - LAUNDRY CARE

  • Wash first sheets so they shrink to fit (we oversize to allow for shrinkage)
  • Machine wash on warm or cold, dry on medium
  • Use a gentle eco-liquid detergent (see recommendations below)
  • Avoid bleach, fabric softener, dryer balls & dryer sheets
  • Remove from dryer when warm to avoid wrinkling
  • Store in linen bag to keep fresh
