Fabrics to Avoid:
Cotton:
Cotton can be a cooling fabric for summer, but if it’s been coated with formaldehyde to make it wrinkle-resistant; you’re now sleeping on toxic chemicals that can be absorbed into your skin. Our pores open when we sleep and any toxins, fabric softeners and bleach used can be absorbed, which can pose a health risk. If you do opt for cotton, choose an organic cotton and a lower thread count, as high thread counts can cause you to sleep hot.
Polyester:
Polyester is a synthetic fabric derived from petroleum products. They’re much less breathable than natural fibers, which can cause you to overheat. Additionally, they can trap moisture, making you feel hot and sweaty in warmer climates and summer months. Polyester blends are also not as soft as natural fibers, so for all these reasons they will not be a good choice as summer bed sheets.
Flannel:
Flannel is primarily a fabric that people use in the fall and winter when they want to climb into a warmer bed, so their sheets don’t have that chill that makes you brace yourself for a few minutes! For this reason, they are definitely not the best bed sheets for summer. Opt instead for breathable, naturally cooling bed sheets.
Qualities to Look For in Summer Bed Sheets
-
Breathability: Choose a thread count between 240-320 for optimal breathability. Thread count means how many threads are woven in one square-inch. The higher the thread count the less breathable the fabric will be.
-
Naturally Cooling Properties: In general, fabrics that are made from natural fibers (not synthetics) will breathe better. Bamboo has a built in cooling technology with micro-gaps and holes in the fibers that allow heat to escape, making them the best bed sheets for summer.
-
Moisture-Wicking Properties: If you perspire, you want a fabric that will absorb the moisture and then release/evaporate it quickly. Bamboo bed sheets evaporate moisture three times faster than cotton.
-
Comfortability: Choose a fabric that your hand, arm or leg will glide effortlessly across. The silkier the fabric, the more gentle it is to your skin, and you’ll sleep more soundly, which is a feat in the heat of summer!

Does thread count matter when picking cooling sheets?

Absolutely, it matters quite a lot. People that shop for very high thread count, expecting them to be the best high quality sheets available; soon learn that their body temperature is rising and they’re sleeping hotter than ever before. Thread counts in the 600+ range simply do not have the ability to breathe because the threads are woven so tightly that air cannot pass through. Opt for 240-320, the sweet-spot for breathability, which also makes them light and airy. BedVoyage makes all our linens at 300 thread count, the perfect blend of silky-soft and breathable, especially for Bed sheets for hot sleepers!
Are BedVoyage sheets still good to use when it’s not summer?
Bamboo fibers are considered thermal-regulating, we call them Smart Sheets because the fibers can sense if you’re overheating and will release the heat through those mentioned micro-gaps and holes. But they also can sense if you’re cold and will keep your warmth in around you, the best bed sheets for winter and summer!
