What is Sustainable Shopping, and is This Trend Growing?
BedVoyage, since its inception in 2008, has always offered sustainable products, it was actually the entire impetus of the company’s mission statement; to offer a sustainable alternative to cotton bedding and bath linens. Bamboo was the perfect fit, because not only is it one of the most renewable resources on the planet, its also grown in a sustainable way with no need for pesticides or fertilizers. The Moso bamboo that BedVoyage uses in the production of all our products is organically farmed, not taken from forests.
When you’re looking for an item you want or need; studies show that 90% of shoppers are willing to pay an extra 10% or more if they can trust that the product is manufactured in a sustainable way. Gen X and Gen Z have driven this preference forward and smart companies are finding ways to meet those demands. BedVoyage has already been doing this for over 16 years, and we continually look for ways to improve. We’ve reduced plastics in our packaging by using drawstring fabric bags for our bedding, and instead of paper bellyband packaging describing the product, we’ve sewn on our labels to limit waste.
What Makes BedVoyage Bamboo Bedding and Bath Linens Sustainable?
As noted, bamboo itself is a sustainable plant, which is actually categorized as a grass, although most of us think of it as a tree. Moso bamboo can grow up to 3 feet per day, without need for any fertilizer, pesticide or herbicides. The plants root system helps to hold down soil, keeping precious dirt from eroding. When harvested, it will grow new shoots from its widespread root system without the need for cultivating or replanting. Bamboo also releases 35% more oxygen into the atmosphere than an equal stand of forest and absorbs more carbon dioxide.
Cotton uses some of the most toxic chemicals on earth during the growing of it. It’s said that one man’s T-Shirt can take up to 2 lbs of chemicals to produce. That is not considered a sustainable fabric, it may be what many are used to buying but now that bamboo is gaining headway in the bedding market, you have an alternative that is more eco-friendly.
Do Bamboo Sheets and Towels Last a Long Time?
You can expect to get many years of wonderful sleep from your silky-smooth bamboo sheets, and the same for the plush and absorbent towels. They should last between 6-9 years if you follow the proper care instructions. We have many customers who’ve told us they are still sleeping on the bamboo sheets they bought from us when we participated in Costco Road Shows over 10 years ago! And our tight twill weave is the secret ingredient to keeping your bamboo bed sheets smooth and silky to the touch, as well as being durable and non-pilling.
When you divide the cost of bamboo linens by the length of time you will enjoy them; it comes to pennies per day to sleep better and bathe cleaner.
Do Sustainable Bamboo Sheets Offer Sleep Benefits?
Yes! Bamboo sheets offer a number of natural attributes that will help you sleep better. The top testimonials we receive from happy customers are the amazingly indescribable feel of bamboo, your body just glides across them in bed, with no tugging or pulling like cheap cottons or microfibers can do. The second testimonial is about the cooling nature of bamboo bedding, like you have your own air condition in bed. The micro-gaps and holes in the fibers allow heat to escape, keeping you cooler.
Bamboo Sheets are hypoallergenic, meaning they are a non-irritant to sensitive skin. If you suffer from eczema, acne or psoriasis your skin will be comforted by bamboo’s silky feel.
But there’s more! Bamboo is also naturally resistant to odors, bacteria and mildew. Your bedding and towels will stay fresh longer, meaning you can save a little time doing laundry, as well as some utility expenses. Bacteria doesn’t grow on bamboo, so your bath towels will never have a mildew scent. That’s a huge plus, especially if you live in a humid climate.
BedVoyage: the Sustainable Brand You Can Trust:
Visit our Sustainability page to learn more about the certifications our products and company are proud to hold. And to see some proof of our claims, you can view our blog on this issue. We show that our products are indeed made from 100% bamboo, not blended with cheap yarns like many other companies who tout they use 100% bamboo. We learned from our factory, while they struggled to dye our deep Indigo blue color, they ordered 14 other brands on Amazon.com stating they were 100% bamboo. Once received, our factory sent them all out for testing and learned 12 of the 14 brands were NOT 100% bamboo, they had blended with other fibers without notifying the consumers.
